Contrary
to earlier reports that Marshall Uwom, the former Rivers State Commissioner
resigned out of his volition, fresh facts have emerged that he was sacked over
his alleged involvement in corruption and fraud. Until his sack on Monday, 13
January 2014, Uwom was a member of the Rivers State Executive Council and the
Commissioner for Housing. An insider within the Rivers State Executive Council
disclosed that Uwom was found to have been involved in corrupt practices in his
ministry. It was further gathered that he was slammed with several queries and
he was presented with the opportunities of defending himself. However, he
always came up with weak excuses.
Irked
by Uwom’s weak defence, the Rivers State governor, Dr. Rotimi Amaechi was
reported to have asked him to resign. But rather than resign quietly without
any drama, Uwom resorted to manipulating the circumstances that led to his sack
by informing the public that he opted to resign because Governor Amaechi
defected from the People Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressive Congress,
APC. Governor Amaechi who has
vowed to combat the scourge of corruption in his administration, is more determined to root
out any member of his cabinet who indulges in the practice. Sources dislosed
that he has set plans in motion to invite the Economic and Financial Crime
Commission, EFCC, to investigate Uwom.
