The recent death
of Erelu Olufunmilayo Suinner has no doubt, thrown the entire Lagos society
into a mourning mood. She died last week, Wednesday, March 26 in London. She
was aged 67. Sadly too, Erelu Suinner was the only child of her 89-year old mother, who is still alive.
She is survived by six children and many grandchildren.
Until her death, Erelu Suinner was a successful business woman and a devoted Christian.
Until her death, Erelu Suinner was a successful business woman and a devoted Christian.
She was one woman
who was well loved and adored by her loved ones. Erelu Suinner was
from the prominent Onashile family of Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State. She was the
mother of Anne Titilope Suinner, the former 2001 Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria
and a former presenter with M-NET. The deceased was also the first cousin of
Dr. Mike Adenuga, the business mogul and chairman of Globacom telecommunication
and the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba 1. Erelu
Suinner’s mother, Mama Onashile is the younger sister of the late Alhaja
Ajijabi Adetona and Mama Oyindamola Adenuga-the mothers of Awujale Sikiru
Adetona and Dr. Mike Adenuga.
Erelu Suinner was
described as one woman who radiated
joy and spread the sunshine that was her life. She lived and led a good life. Since
the news of her death broke last week, a gathering of family members, friends
and sympathisers converged at her Lekki residence, while few others visited her
mother’s residence in Surulere, to register their sympathy. At Mama Onashile’s
residence, a deep feeling of sorrow and loss pervaded the gathering. Although,
there was no crying and wailing sense, gloom, like an overlord, held sway. Save
for the sonorous sound string and emotional songs, there was pin-drop silence.
The ELITES
gathered that Erelu Suinner had been battling with cancer of the colon in the
last couple of years. Few months ago, her health condition took a turn for the
worse and she was admitted at Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island.
Meanwhile, sensing that there was a need to get her a more comprehensive
medical treatment, Erelu Suinner’s cousin, Dr. Mike Adenuga suggested that she
be flown abroad. Invariably, she was admitted at a highbrow hospital in
Wellington in the United Kingdom. It was while Erelu Suinner was at the
hospital that the doctors disclosed to her family that she might not live up to
two months, and thus, they advised that she should be moved to an hospice. The
very adorable society matriarch had barely stayed two weeks at the hospice
before she gave up the ghost.
Her painful death notwithstanding, Erelu Suinner’s family
and friends are consoled by the knowledge that she lived and led a most
remarkable life, during her eventful sojourn on earth. Her family will announce
her burial ceremony later this week.
