Chime, whose tenure expires in 2015, had been locked in a contest with the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, over the seat of the Enugu West Senatorial District.
The governor had already been screened for the Peoples Democratic Party senatorial election primaries by the party’s screening committee.
The Chief Press Secretary to Chime, Chukwudi Achife, confirmed the development on Friday.
