I have been spending some days and nights in Borno and visited a number of places. Today I visited a couple of IDP camps in and around Maiduguri. It is a shame that thousands of children are in a hopeless situation. The conditions in the camps can be better than it is. The brave men and women who volunteer in the camps are working tirelessly but feel frustrated. I particularly feel ashamed that we are still letting vulnerable Nigerians down. Whatever you can do as an individual please take time off to visit Borno. Let us defy the insurgents. The people here are friendly, determined and resilient.
For every stranger they see, they see hope. I am happy I am spending my holiday here and my hard earned money in Borno State. Every naira I spend here will contribute to the economy of a neglected people. We are Nigerians. We need to do more for our people. The Buhari government should send honest; transparent and fair people to take stock and give genuine feedback to eliminate corruption. If we don't take care of those traumatised children, enclosed in camps some as large as over 19 thousand displaced persons. If we turn our back on them, they will come to hunt us tommorow. What can be done? Volunteer with NEMA Red Cross Doctors Without Border or any other agencies. Put pressure on the Buhari government and Borno government to do more. Visit Borno if you can, we now have daily flights into Maiduguri airport. Let us help our own. I am enjoying my stay here and tapping into the strength of the people of Borno who say for all Boko Haram bombs they won't abandon thier homeland.
