Official reaction that followed the allegation by Visioners for New Lagos (VNL), a new group within the political formation of Lagos State did not depict a leadership that is amenable to change. But one thing is clear from that exchange; it is the fact that the alleged preference for a former Accountant-General of Lagos, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, is daily becoming an impossible mission.
Although the career civil servant has since the attacks of the past weeks gone to town with a view to leveraging some media stunt, it is yet to be seen which of the tools of propaganda will sell this seemingly drab and obviously selfish initiative.
However, none of the developments of the past weeks has been able to shake an unyielding Bola Tinubu, the self-acclaimed national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC). With his palpable God complex and ownership mien that many now resent, Tinubu is oblivious of the fact that while he seeks to be part of a much touted change on the national front in 2015, a similar revolution awaits the state of Lagos. It will start right from his political household.
At the APC state congress held last weekend, Tinubu allegedly said he became governor in 1999 in his 40s and turned 50 while in office. As such, no prospective governor of the state that is over 50 years will be allowed to govern the state any more. The youths, he said, will henceforth take charge. Brilliant idea, no doubt! But could that have come from a sincere mindset? No!
It is still part of the game to eliminate certain persons from the race, the reason for the many factors being introduced into the race. From the choice of a Christian candidate to zoning, the age limit is yet another card that is bent to fall flat.
Sadly, that this is coming from a character who has continued to shield the truth about his birth much less the schools attended depicts the tragedy of the Nigerian society. Such a grandstanding clearly brings to mind the embarrassment that typified the administration of Tinubu in 1999, when he was faced with allegations of age falsification and school certificate scandal. And then, such a man is setting standard in the Lagos of 2014? This is rather the eighth wonder of the world.
There is no gainsaying the fact that such arrogant disposition compounded by some kind of God complex is a manifestation of the liberality of Lagos. But such cannot be taken for granted. Lagos is not a personal belonging of anybody but a collective heritage that must be preserved by all. This is why all the stakeholders in the state must rise up against this festering menace for their collective good.
