The report is that Buhari’s visit was to sound Fashola out regarding coming on board as Buhari’s running mate come the 2015 elections. It is not clear whether Fashola agreed to be Buhari’s running mate.
Will APC beat PDP in the 2015 election? No one is sure but if feelers flying round are anything to go by, then APC may be ready to pull out a joker.
On Sunday October 12, 2014, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) paid what was reported as a courtesy visit to Lagos House, Marina, the official residence of Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, the Executive governor of Lagos state.
General Buhari had in his train Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, former FCT minister who has declared his intention to rule Kaduna state, Alhaji Aminu Masari, former speaker of the House of Representatives and Timipre Silva, former governor of Bayelsa state.
Buhari who will be formally declaring his intention to run for the Presidency for the 4th time on Wednesday said he was in Lagos to deliver an invitation to Fashola in person because Lagos is the biggest constituency of the APC.
But what the former military man may not have said, a source indicates, was the content of his personal deliberations with Fashola.
The belief is that Buhari’s visit was to sound Fashola out regarding coming on board as Buhari’s running mate come the 2015 elections.
It is not clear whether Fashola agreed to be Buhari’s running mate but the man who many believe has transformed Lagos state already has his eyes on becoming a Senator, a dream that may not be realised except many say, the leaders of the APC can prevail on a well-connected female Senator to step down in his favour.
Buhari has long been touted to be considering Tinubu as his running mate. The choice has not gone down well not just because of the prospect of a Muslim/Muslim ticket but also because of what many see as Tinubu’s overbearing influence on the APC as well as his ambition.
A Buhari/Fashola ticket may be more palatable despite the fact that it would also present a Muslim/Muslim ticket because many see Fashola as an urbane achiever whose antecedents as governor of Lagos would be a boon to the Buhari candidacy.
As Buhari declares today, many would be looking to see who will eventually become his running mate.
Will it be Fashola or his mentor, Tinubu and will the eventual choice improve APC’s chances against the PDP’s Goodluck Jonathan?
Time will tell.
