Otunba Alao Akala |
The former Governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, has formally declared for the Labour Party.
Alao-Akala dumped the Peoples Democratic Party alongside thousands of his supporters on Monday evening at his Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State residence.
He said the decision was made based on the demand by his teeming supporters to quit the PDP.
At an enlarged meeting of stakeholders in Ibadan, some of the leaders of the party, who are sympathetic to his cause, said the reason behind the call to quit the PDP was because of the insincerity and injustice in the party.
Barrister Abraham Ojo, Alao-Akala’s media aide, said in a statement on his behalf: “Thousands of supporters of the former governor today stormed the Bodija residence to deliberate on the way forward after the injustice meted to him by the PDP.
“After series of meetings and discussions, they all decided to leave the PDP and move to an alternative party, which is Labour Party.”
Among the party leaders at the meetings were Chief Jacob Adetoro, Chief Adigun Irawo, past commissioners and local government chairmen among others.
They argued that there was no basis for them to remain in the PDP because the party has refused follow the path of truth.
The statement by Ojo adds: “Everybody in the state knows that Alao-Akala and his supporters are strong pillars that hold the party and if a genuine delegate congress is conducted, Alao-Akala will always win, but since the National Secretariat has given in to the manipulations of the minority in the party, we have no option than to quit.
“We have waited this long believing that the national body of the party will see the reason why they should allow genuine process to take place, but for some anti-progress elements in the party do not believe in the process.
“They aid and abet fraud and manipulation of every right thing we try to do.
“Now we have decided to leave the party so that they will have their way, but we are not just leaving, we are collapsing all the party structures under our control into our new party.”
