Today, January 29, marks the 10th memorial of
Justice Muritala Aremu Okunola, the revered justice in the Court of Appeal in
Lagos State. Justice Okunola died
on Thursday, January 29, 2004 in Mecca, where he had gone to perform Hajj. A
special prayer session for the repose of his soul has been slated to hold today
at his residence in Muri Okunola Street, Victoria Island.
During his lifetime, Justice Okunola was widely known to be a
great Lagosian, legal luminary, incorruptible judge, pious Muslim and above
all, a God-fearing Nigerian who believed in just and egalitarian Nigeria. He
lived a life of unstinted service to humanity and to his fatherland. Justice
Okunola was one of the very few exemplary citizens that can be regarded as a
shinning example of a good man. In 2009, the Lagos State Government unveiled
his bust and dedicated a park to him. The park is located at Ozumba Mbadiwe
Way, Victoria Island.
Justice Okunola is survived by, his wife Alhaja Ramdalat
Fehintola, five children and many grandchildren. Notable among his children are
Hakeem Muri Okunola, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Bureau of Lands and
Rasheed Muri Okunola, the Personal Assistant to Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola
of Lagos State.
